How to grow and dry your own herbs
7
- Grow: Start with easy-to-identify plants such as peppermint, lemon balm, and thyme.
- Harvest: Pick healthy leaves or flowers from plants free of pesticides and other contaminants.
- Clean: Remove insects and dirt. Wash when needed, then dry the surface thoroughly.
- Dry: Spread herbs in a clean, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight, or use a dehydrator according to its instructions.
- Store: Only seal herbs once completely dry. Discard any that develop mold, unusual odors, or signs of moisture.
Never brew unidentified wild plants. Some toxic plants closely resemble edible herbs.
5. Important safety rules
Natural does not automatically mean safe. Herbal preparations can have side effects and interact with prescription and over-the-counter medications.
- Start with ordinary food-level preparations rather than concentrated extracts.
- Ask a healthcare professional or pharmacist before using medicinal teas regularly if you take medication.
- Seek professional advice before medicinal herbal use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
- Do not give medicinal herbal preparations to infants or young children without professional guidance.
- Don’t use herbs as a replacement for prescribed treatment or urgent medical care.
- Avoid ingesting essential oils as a substitute for tea; they are much more concentrated than brewed herbs.
